This statement is going to live rent-free in my head for a long time to come, I suspect. #ActivityPub
@hrefna @tchambers I see a lot of irony in this being an image rather than a quote toot
I’m probably out of the loop or daft on something. Is there any reason in particular why it’s gonna live rent free or why the comment about screenshots strikes so hard?
A few things.
First, that is _laughably_ far from where we are today.
Second, to the degree we are there it has very little to do with ActivityPub and more to do with people believing in the vision of the fediverse.
Finally, given the lack of support for (and the massive resistance toward) quote-boosting, differing formats between platforms, etc it's hard to see how you can claim that the vision of not using screenshots is something that we are approaching.
Well, on the quote posting issue: i think that across all the major mobile apps and Phanpy that is already a settled issue and all have basic support.
From Mastodon as a service soon - they will do formal support for this at their server level. And places like Firefish and other fediverse servers have been there for a while.
So I think that issue has been functionally put to bed.
@tchambers Minor quibble here, Phanpy displays quote posts nicely, but you can't quote a post yourself from the UI. If you can, I'd like to know how! :)
@box464 I see this UX in the reply links...allowing for quotes from desktop web UX....do you not see that?
@tchambers How did I miss this. I see it on my phone now, but triple checked on my desktop before responding earlier. Apologies.
@box464 All good!
Btw @rolle and nileane@nileane.fr is this something that #BirdUI or #tangerineUI could also add in a future version? Or is that something beyond what just pure CSS can do?
@tchambers @box464 Cannot be added, because it is not an app. We can just modify a style for something that Mastodon already has. New ”features” are not a thing for CSS. Consider it as ”skin” or ”theme”, that describes it best whereas Phanpy and Elk are full blown apps.
