[Allegedly] [...] Meta is delaying Fediverse support for European Union Threads users due to the Digital Markets Act, which (for better or worse) complicates launching new technologies within the European Market for non-European companies.

@rolle its GDPR.
Their employees have said such things on their profiles when it's discussed.
I definitely see why it could be problematic. EU tends to "not fuck around" when it comes to GDPR and making sure data deletion requests are adhered to.
Threads is legally obligated to ensure the deletion of data that's requested for deletion and they can't possibly ensure that with Fediverse platforms like Pleroma having MRF policies to deny delete requests...
No, this is different and is a major issue for Foss project within the EU. Been hearing about it a lot from the Linux podcast I listen to.
It basically makes it so Tech companies are liable for anything that happens on their platforms or any security breaches attributed to their software. And for Meta or even projects providing key libraries and programs for Linux this could be bad.
The EU are quite pro-FOSS so I do have my doubts about that generalization. Might @echo_pbreyer have any insight perhaps?
They are definitely pro Foss but that doesn't always translate to Legislation that isn't bad.
And I could have misinterpreted what I was hearing, or how I worded it as well.
@echo_pbreyer @troed@sangberg.se @CWSmith @rolle I have discussed it with employees and they've said GDPR specifically
It could be several things at the same time though.
@rolle Serious question: are ppl really using threads actively? I remember it taking off initially, then dying (in terms of active users) fairly quickly.
@justinf @rolle depends on if algorithms feeding you posts that you're completely uninterested in, is worth it to you.
That's pretty much the only big difference besides the amount of people to engage with.
It's still very hard to get actual engagement on your own posts unless you're talking to the algorithm.
I prefer to talk to people, not the algorithm. That's why I'm here and will stay here until Mastodon eventually completely takes over. Then I'm out. But I'm here till then.
@justinf @BeAware I've been using it out of curiosity and because most of the Finnish people settled in. There are some thousands of Finnish nerds on Mastodon as well but mostly Mastodon is an international playground for me. Finland is a small country (5.6 million people) and so far those that I follow have adopted Threads.
I hope in some form we get these worlds combined in the future through the Fediverse sharing feature when it opens up. But even if we won't, I'm quite happy with these two platforms. Using X and Bluesky are not an option for me. 2 is definitely max.
@justinf 90% of the people I used to follow are on Threads. The active user amount surpassed X a while ago. Threads been attracting constantly new users, definitely more active than Bluesky for example.
This being said, Mastodon is the single most active platform from my prospective. Too little amount of nerds on Threads in my taste.
@rolle I find the vibe on Mastodon refreshing. Very personable, chill, and in many ways supportive. X (where I have an account for networking) feels full of tech bros, gurus, and the like. Would you say Threads is somewhere in between?
@rolle Mikä on vain ja ainoastaan hyvä asia. Samaa Meta-paskaa eri paketissa.
@rolle Just a note on this, all of this Fediverse integration appears to be one way. No outside content being shared into Threads. And so by definition, the place to consume the best content is....inside Threads. Result = user retention.
@justinf Yeah, for now. It's beta and progressing really slowly. I'm eagerly awaiting what the full integration will be like. A week ago we already saw a progress about two-way replies: https://www.threads.net/@0xjessel/post/C_Oeq5by64q/
