@BeAware what happend with your instance?
@fbievan mastodon updates were getting too uncomfortable for my Linux knowledge, plus Fedi isn't what it was 2 years ago and I don't really see it becoming what I expected it to be. Also, I get too much hate for simply enjoying something on Fedi for me to want to pay to host my own instance.
@BeAware I get that...
I continue to host my own instance (social.fbievan.live), but I'm more active on these other accounts cause erm... Idk, there's a local community on these...
I never have hosted mastodon (I've always opted for pleroma), and I did host a kbin and freetube instances, but those got a bit too resource intensive for my servers.
@fbievan I was very early in my Fedi adventure when I started, so Mastodon was the default choice and I didn't want to take the time to look into the others before I got the Mastodon instance running.
Also, I don't like Pleroma because of the insane crap you can do with Pleroma's MRF policies.
I may end up hosting again. I have a few more domains that I keep up that I can use in that case.
However, I am very uncomfortable with Linux and need very detailed guides with commands to do most anything.
Honestly, these days if I did start up another instance, I'd probably use a combination of available guides and ChatGPT to get me through things because I barely know what I'm doing, especially when it comes to network security or optimization of resources. I was harshly overpaying for my Mastodon instance because I didn't know how to optimize stuff to get the most out of the hardware.
@BeAware MRF is super useful for single user instances...
I use it to get rid of any non-standard Unicode messages (basically all of the Chinese and Japanese characters, because they serve no use to me), I also use it to remove words like 'trump' from the federated timeline, because it was just filled with that (still pops up from following users though)
I also removed any mentions of only fans, and also forced bots to have their posts unlisted...
Its just stuff that's useful for a single user federated instance, tbh
